We Are Here is proud to share that our co-founder, Shea Mencel, was recently featured on the Her Health Compass podcast in a powerful conversation with Suzanne Stone, CEO of the Livestrong Foundation, hosted by Yonni Wattenmaker and Heather Ouida.

Her Health Compass is a platform dedicated to creating space for honest, human conversations about women’s health, survivorship, and navigating complex health journeys. The podcast elevates stories that are often missing from traditional care conversations, with a focus on education, empowerment, and connection.

In this episode, Shea shares her experience as a 2x breast cancer survivor, diagnosed at 29 with a metastatic recurrence at 32, and her deeply personal fertility journey that unfolded alongside cancer treatment and survivorship.

The conversation focuses on the realities of navigating fertility decisions after a cancer diagnosis — and how often these conversations are delayed, minimized, or treated as secondary to treatment decisions, even though they are time-sensitive and life-shaping.

For many patients, fertility is not a “future consideration.”

It is an immediate part of cancer care planning.

When it is not addressed early, patients are often left making irreversible decisions under extreme emotional and medical pressure, without full access to options or support.

At We Are Here, we believe fertility is part of whole person care in cancer treatment. It belongs in the first conversations at diagnosis, alongside treatment planning, not after those windows may have already closed.

We are grateful to Her Health Compass and the Livestrong Foundation for elevating these conversations and helping bring greater awareness to what patients and survivors truly need from the moment of diagnosis.
