The thing is, cancer doesn’t just change the person diagnosed—it changes the entire family. It shifts relationships, routines, and emotions in ways that aren’t easy to put into words. And yet, when someone we love is going through it, we want nothing more than to be there, offer comfort, and make sure they know they’re not alone.

That’s why I’m so honored to be a guest writer for We Are Here—an organization that creates spaces for cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers to connect with the support they need. I also built KINNECT—because families deserve a private, safe place to share memories, navigate difficult moments, and hold on to the stories that matter most.

This collaboration between KINNECT and We Are Here ensures that no one feels alone in this experience.

Why technology hasn’t caught up to real-life

There are 19 million people in the U.S. living with cancer, and yet modern technology hasn’t been designed with them—or their families—in mind. Social media is too public and too noisy. Support groups can be helpful but don’t always feel personal enough. And for the people going through it, even well-meaning messages from friends can sometimes feel overwhelming.

When my friend Brandon was battling cancer, he told me something I’ll never forget:

“If I make it through this, I want to build something to help people navigate this experience. Because even with all the people reaching out, I still feel alone.”

That stuck with me because, the truth is, technology hasn’t caught up to real life. It hasn’t figured out how to guide families through these moments, how to create spaces that are private, meaningful, and actually helpful—without ads, data mining, or distractions.

That’s what we’re changing with KINNECT.

What makes KINNECT different?

KINNECT isn’t about engagement metrics or algorithms—it’s about people. It’s a private, invite-only space where families can:

✔ Share voice notes, videos, and memories with each other in the Kinnect App on the Apple Store.
✔ Check in daily without the pressure of a public post in the Kinnect App on the Apple Store.

✔ Preserve memories through KINNECT Books, a tool for documenting legacies with guided questions, text, and voice technology.
✔ Capture stories in both English and Spanish with KINNECT Books because our communities deserve that representation.

This isn’t just for the moment—it’s for years from now when families want to return to these messages, these voices, these stories.

Real support requires more than just connection

At KINNECT, technology should support the whole person, not just their digital presence. That’s why we have Dr. Evan, a specialist in palliative care, geriatric care, and end-of-life support, on our team. His expertise ensures that everything we build is designed with care, dignity, and real emotional support in mind.

Because when families are navigating something as tricky as cancer, they don’t just need connection—they need guidance, comfort, and a space where they can just be.

Building for the communities who need it most

Cancer doesn’t discriminate. It impacts all families across cultures, backgrounds, and languages. But historically, technology hasn’t been built with that inclusivity in mind.

From the beginning, KINNECT has prioritized both English and Spanish speakers because we know that language is more than just words—it’s about comfort, identity, and belonging. That’s why our tools are designed for families of all forms, including those in Latino and LGBTQ+ communities, who often don’t see themselves reflected in traditional cancer support spaces.

We’re here to change that.

Why this collaboration with We Are Here matters

At its core, this partnership between KINNECT and We Are Here is about one thing:

Real support for real people.
Privacy-first connection that helps.
A space where families can hold on to what matters most.

Because at the end of the day, you make KINNECT special. Your stories. Your memories. The way you show up for each other, even in the most challenging moments.

This is about ensuring those moments live on, not just for today but for the future.

So share this with someone you love. Tell them why their voice, their memories, and their presence matter because they do. And always will. <3
